Currently Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands. It had a population of 747,290 on January 1, 2008. Amsterdam comprises the northern part of the Randstad, the 6th-largest metropolitan area in Europe. The population is about 6.7 million people. The city is the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands. There are many large Dutch institutions that have their headquarters in Amsterdam. Seven of the world’s top 500 companies, including Philips and ING, are based there.
