Home Contents Insurance: What will it do for you?

By Honey B. Wackx

We all want to protect as much of our belongings as possible, even if that includes assorted items we have collected over the years. Getting home insurance for your house is good, usually mandatory, but is not enough. As is usual with most insurance policies there is something(s) that still remain uncovered.

You should be sure to get the contents of your house covered as well. What’s in your house is worth a lot too. Over the years most of us accumulate a lot of “stuff”, some of which we may not be using currently. Some of these things could be hard to replace or have value we would hate to lose entirely. You need to make sure your house and your home contents are both protected.

When you are thinking of signing up for a home contents insurance policy, here are some of the important things you should look for:

1. Unrestrained home contents insurance. Some insurance companies may put a maximum amount as a limit on your home’s contents coverage. But a lot of them don’t. If you have a choice, go for the company that offers unlimited coverage; that is they have no maximum amount of money they will pay. You will get more out of the insurance policy this way.

2. Get the home contents insurance that covers the most damage coming from both natural and man-made occurrences. Examples of man-made problems are damages resulting from the water that escapes out from dishwashers, washing machines, and other water installations and plumbing. Natural occurrence includes damage arising from land subsiding from under your house.

3. Home contents insurance easy payment options. Several insurance companies offer their clients different options to pay. Along with that, discounts are given for annual payments with finance or other charges applied those to who choose to pay on a monthly basis. If you happen to find a company that allows you to pay every month at no extra cost, you might just have found yourself the right policy.

4. Discounts and other perks. Home contents insurance companies that provide additional discounts with combined insurance coverage are the best alternative. For example, if you already have auto insurance with them there could be a nice discount on the home contents insurance. And if they can give you additional benefits like 24-hour service, free recovery service, and free legal advice along with that, you get yourself an even better deal.

5. Make sure it covers the most important items. If you have some specific things you want to cover make sure it covers them. This might incur an extra charge, so you might have to weigh that in your decision. If for example, you have some irreplaceable jewelry valued at $200,000 in your house or a laptop computer as well as your other computers you want covered, be sure to specifically inquire about coverage of such items. You don’t want to find out later if you need to use the policy that your important valuables weren’t covered.

I live in Southern California and am a member of the Auto Club. Because I have two homes insured with them and my cars with an auto policy, I enjoy a nice discount on all my policies. The discount would also apply to any other policy I get through them.

Safely secure your home’s contents with a home contents insurance policy. Make sure you get adequate protection for the things you purchased for your home. Many of those things may be as important as the home itself. Don’t shortchange yourself. For a relatively small amount you can protect the contents of your home. Check with your insurance agent for more complete details.
