Travel Insurance: Don’t Travel Long Trips without It

Travel Insurance: Don’t Travel Long Trips without It

One of the last things most people want to think about is insurance. It is often forced upon us by the government and the nature of the society we live in. In some places like California big cities the cost of some types of insurance is way out of the reach of those with meager paying jobs and the poor.

There is one type of insurance that is really worthwhile if you are traveling far from home and are going to be away for more than a few days. That is travel insurance. A real good idea is don’t travel long trips without it. Anybody who has ever fallen ill while abroad on holiday will know only too well how it can ruin a long awaited holiday and, without health insurance, can literally turn it into the holiday from hell.

Lying in a hospital bed thousands of miles from home gives you plenty of time to think and the one thing you do not want to be thinking about is the fact that you did not bother to arrange travel health insurance before you set off.

Travel insurance will cover you for a variety of different things, including medical expenses, both in the run-up to your holiday and while you are abroad. It can however be expensive and so you do need to think about a few things before you rush out and buy it.

For instance, if you taking a short trip to somewhere with good low cost health facilities and a round-trip airfare of just $250 then you might feel that travel health insurance is unnecessary. In this case your financial losses if you cancel the trip may be quite low and the cost of medical treatment while you are abroad, or if necessary of getting you back home, might also be quite low. You will need to consider this carefully and make up your own mind about whether or not there is enough risk to justify the cost of travel insurance. However, if you have booked a $10,000 African safari holiday of a lifetime cruise then arranging travel health insurance makes a great deal of sense.

A travel health insurance plan should provide a good range of cover for the period prior to your trip, while you are traveling and at your destination. Amongst other things it should cover you for both personal injury and death and should also cover the costs of all your medical expenses while on you are on holiday. It is also a good idea to look for a plan which will cover you for the cost of being transported back home should this be needed after an accident or illness.

Another thing which you ought to think about is the level of health care provided at your destination. If you are going to be holidaying in a country with limited or poor medical facilities then you should think about arranging a plan which also covers you for the cost of transportation to a third country where you can get the medical care you need.

Having decided what sort of plan you want one final step before rushing out to arrange cover is to check any existing health insurance plan you hold. You will sometimes find that it is possible to extend your regular plan to cover you for your trip and you may even find that you already have some travel cover which simply needs to be topped up for this particular holiday.

None of us like to think that anything bad is going to happen to us when we are on holiday but unfortunately accidents do happen and we all fall ill unexpectedly from time to time. Evidence also shows us all too clearly that a lot of people set off on holiday without adequate cover only to find themselves in a terrible mess. Make sure that you have travelers medical insurance before you set off on your next holiday and, whatever happens, at least you will have the peace of mind of knowing that you have the resources to sort out any problems.
